Patron Saint of Naples and Blood Banks

Legend has it that Bishop Januarius was martyred during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian in 305. After Januarius and his companions survived a martyrdom attempt by wild animals in an amphitheater, they were beheaded. His blood was collected in a vial and brought to Naples. Several times a year, the blood miraculously liquefies and bubbles.
