St. Leo the Great
St. Leo the Great was pope from 440-461 and is a Doctor of the Church. He is the first pope to have been named 鈥淕reat鈥. He earned the title by meeting the invading Attila the Hun at the gates of Rome in 452 and stopping the invasion of Italy, saving the Church. Leo is known as a Doctor of the Church for his writings on Christology and papal authority, many of which have influenced theologians Church history. 鈥淥ur Redeemer鈥檚 visible presence has passed over into the sacraments.鈥 -St. Leo
