Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531. Our Lady asked him to be her special messenger. She provided proof of their encounters for his skeptical bishop in the form of two signs: a cloak full of fresh roses and a miraculous image of herself of Juan Diego鈥檚 tilma (cloak). Our Lady of Guadalupe teaches us that God鈥檚 love for the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself. Pope Pius XII decreed Our Lady of Guadalupe to be 鈥淧atroness of all the Americas.鈥 The image on St. Juan Diego鈥檚 cloak is enshrined at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. It is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Pope John Paul II visited the Basilica four times throughout his pontificate.
